First off this collection of juvenilia and short stories has nothing to do with the movie "Love and Friendship," which is actually based on the novella "Lady Susan." Lady Susan Vernon discloses her many attempts to find and capture suitable husbands for herself and her young daughter. Love and Friendship was written for the amusement of Austen's family as a parody of contemporary romance novels. Lesley Castle is a brief, amusing history of England. I can safely assure you that whereas the plot of the film follows Lady Susan very faithfully, it contains no reference to Love and Friendship at all. The only possible reason for the film’s title is that all of Austen’s Juvenilia in Penguin Classics are published as ‘Love and Friendship and other Youthful Writings. One particular passage from Love and Freindship was so so funny. How does she do it? Some stories were better than others, to be fair. Lady Susan was also good, and, as suggested in the intro, reminiscent of Liaisons dangereuses (epistolary style, but also the theme of artfulness/dissimulation esp in women (Lady Susan)/5. Set in the s, Love and Friendship centers on beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon, who has come to the estate of her in-laws to wait out colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica/10(K).
